Women are at an especially high risk of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, a painful autoimmune condition that leads to swollen and stiff joints and other symptoms. One study has now found that drinking beer could actually lower a woman’s risk of developing symptoms of this painful condition. The study which was conducted by researchers at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston. It found that moderate alcohol consumption by women could reduce the risk of rheumatoid arthritis development in the future among women.
The use of any form of alcohol in moderate form reduced the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis by approximately 21%. However, when the women drank approximately 2 to 4 beers per week, it actually reduced their risk of developing the disease by nearly 1/3rd . While all forms of moderate alcohol consumption seems to cut down arthritis development, beer seems to be linked to significant reductions. Approximately 2 to 4 beers per week seemed to have the most desirable effects and contributed to a 31% in rheumatoid arthritis risk, which is significant.
That doesn’t, however, mean that women should go out and drink heavily. The researchers provide no explanation for why consuming beer seems to reduce the risk of arthritis. It is also not clear why the same beer consumption does not seem to affect men at all. Rheumatoid arthritis can affect anyone, but women are at a much higher risk of developing this condition. Persons between the age of 40 to 60 and smokers may also be at a much higher risk of rheumatoid arthritis.
