Depression: Second-Leading Cause of Disability Worldwide

November 7, 2013 | By Natalie | Social Security Disability

One of the biggest causes of disability leading to loss of income and loss of productivity is one that does not have visible physical symptoms, but it can severely impair a person’s ability to earn a living. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, depression is now the second leading cause of disability across the world, and the leading cause in the United States.

According to the report published in the journal PLOS Medicine, depression is now a major global health epidemic and must be treated as a serious health priority that affects productivity. The study compared more than 200 other conditions that caused disability with clinical depression and found that depression ranks behind back pain as a leading cause of disability globally.

In the United States clinical depression is now the leading cause of disability as determined by a review of existing literature involving earlier studies of major depressive disorder and other milder forms of depression.

Across the world, depression is now a serious financial burden on governments that find that the number of people who are unable to go out and earn a living because of their anxiety-related condition is a serious economic crisis. What’s worse is that in many countries depression is not even considered a major disability. Differences in awareness and education levels also make diagnosis, treatment, and compensation for this disability very difficult.

Clinical depression can be a condition that qualifies for Social Security disability benefits. If your depression has left you with symptoms like lack of energy, difficulty in concentration, paranoia, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts and other symptoms, then you may be able to apply for Social Security disability benefits.

"I would highly recommend this firm to everyone, Wonderful firm, they took my case , when I was told by a few firms in Ohio that I did not have a case, Marc Whitehead and Associates settled the case in a timely fashion"  Delecia via
"I want to thank the office of Marc Whitehead and especially Jaime Almaguer who was my caseworker. I had begun the disability process myself until I heard about this lawyers' office in Texas. Seemed strange working with folks across the country that I would never meet. Nevertheless, they were able to get my disability first time around. I felt comfortable discussing my issues privately with them and being able to let Jaime do the work. He was responsive, caring and very professional. Thank you all so much, this has changed my life."  Lynne via
