Everyone knows that Father’s Day happens every June; a lot of people don’t realize that June is also Men’s Health Month. Men’s Health Month is a time to raise awareness of the unique health issues men face and encourage males of all ages to pursue a healthy, active lifestyle and get regular medical examinations.
Why is it important to raise awareness of men’s health issues? Many of the health problems affecting men can result in long-term disabilities. On average, the life expectancy of a man is five years less than that of a woman. When you look at the top causes of death, you’ll notice that men die at higher rates than women in nearly every category, particularly heart disease. Men are more likely to die from suicide, homicide, and unintentional injuries, such as motor vehicle-related injuries and drug overdoses, as well.
Reversing the Trends
One of the goals of Men’s Health Month is to reverse these trends. There are many steps men can take to protect themselves from long-term disability and early death.
If you’re a man, make sure you get a thorough medical exam on a regular basis. A lot of men’s health issues, such as heart disease and cancer, can be effectively treated if they’re diagnosed in their earliest stages. Unfortunately, a number of men ignore the symptoms of potentially serious medical conditions, resulting in higher rates of early death and long-term disability.
Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is equally important. Many of the conditions that contribute to long-term disabilities among men, such as heart disease, obesity, and diabetes can result from poor lifestyle choices. Components of a healthy male lifestyle include:
- Regular exercise
- Eating a healthy diet
- Maintaining a healthy weight
- Not smoking
- Not abusing drugs
- Moderate drinking only
- Safe sex practices
Mental health is another important health issue for men. One of the big problems is that a lot of men are reluctant to seek help for mental health issues. Men should be encouraged to reach out to mental healthcare professionals for depression, PTSD, and other problems.
