Arthritis in the knees is one of the more disabling conditions facing women. But according to a new study, drinking up to six glasses of milk every week could help women reduce the risk of knee arthritis.
The study was conducted by researchers at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and it found that drinking up to six glasses of fat-free or low-fat milk every week actually reduced the risk of the development of knee arthritis. While researchers saw a decrease with milk consumption, researchers found that eating cheese actually increased the risk of arthritis. Women who ate large amounts of cheese showed an increased progression of knee arthritis. The study is believed to be the largest to determine the effect of dairy intake on progression of knee arthritis.
As part of the study, the researchers followed approximately 1,200 women beginning in 2002. The research also included 900 men in their early 60s. All of these persons suffered from knee arthritis. The researchers analyzed the person’s dietary habits, including milk consumption. When they analyzed the x-rays of the knees to monitor the progression of the disease, they found that women who drank up to six glasses of milk a week had the slowest progression of the disease. Milk intake seemed to have no effect on the progression of the condition in males.
