A Social Security Disability claim starts with an initial application. It takes approximately 3 to 5 months to get a decision on the initial application. If you are denied at the initial application stage, you have 60 days to file a request for reconsideration (in Texas–whether you have a reconsideration step varies from state to state). If you are denied at the reconsideration stage, you then have 60 days to request a hearing. It currently takes approximately 8 to 9 months to get a hearing in Houston. If you receive a favorable ruling in the hearing, it will likely take another couple of months to receive the favorable decision and the award.
