National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) is observed every October in the U.S. This is a time to raise awareness about the important issues facing Americans with disabilities while also celebrating their many contributions to the nation’s workforce.
This year, the theme for NDEAM is #InclusionWorks.
“By fostering a culture that embraces individual differences, including disabilities, businesses profit by having a wider variety of tools to confront challenges,” said Jennifer Sheehy, deputy assistant secretary of labor for disability employment policy. “Our nation’s most successful companies proudly make inclusion a core value. They know that inclusion works. It works for workers, it works for employers, it works for opportunity, and it works for innovation.”
There are a wide range of disabling conditions and these conditions have varying degrees of severity. While some Americans with disabling conditions are unable to work, many others who can work are unable to find employment because of workplace discrimination issues. This is why it’s so important to pass along the message of #InclusionWorks and help highlight the value of a diversified workforce that utilizes the many skills and talents of workers with disabilities.
