Every year, October is marked as National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM) in the United States. This time is designated to raise awareness about issues affecting Americans with disabilities and to celebrate their many and varied contributions to our nation.
This year’s theme for NDEAM is “Inclusion Drives Innovation,” reflecting the important role that different perspectives play in a successful workforce.
There are many different types of disabling conditions, and all have varying degrees of severity. Some Americans with disabling conditions are unable to work and must rely on disability benefits for income. However, many others are able to work but have difficulty finding employment because of workplace discrimination issues. This is just one of the reasons why the theme of “Inclusion Drives Innovation” strives to highlight the value of a diversified workforce that utilizes the many skills and talents of all workers, including those with disabilities.
“Americans of all abilities must have access to good, safe jobs,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Alexander Acosta.
“Smart employers know that including different perspectives in problem-solving situations leads to better solutions. Hiring employees with diverse abilities strengthens their business, increases competition and drives innovation.”
